Hello, world.
I'm a web developer with too much time and bandwidth on my hands. I'd use that time to roam about in EVE looking for great fights, but I'm sure we can all agree that they are a sparse commodity.
That's about to change.
For the past few months, I've been developing a service called EVE Arena. In a nutshell, EVE Arena facilitiates for thrilling encounters whenever you'd like. You'll no longer need to set aside an evening's worth of waiting around to find yourself immersed in the roaring autocannons, frantic instructions and exploding spaceships we all love so much.
If you'd rather leave the frantic instructions out, that's cool, too. EVE Arena accomodates for both 1v1 encounters and fleet-based skirmishes. Both divisions are ranked and filled to the brim with features that allow you to find opponents and schedule matches by the click of a button.
There's more to EVE Arena than hours of fun, challenging engagements and unparalleled e-fame, though. There's also money to be earned. Lots of money.

Good luck.

Originally by: Spectre3353 I think this is a cool idea but I wonder how well it work out. Can you really trust people in Eve to be civilized enough to not just use this as a way to bait and blob unsuspecting free kills?
No. There's no way around it, though. Seeing the lack of game mechanics to support the concept, it must be based on trust.
Quote: How can you be sure that people are going to report the correct outcome of a fight?
I'm not sure that people are going to report the correct outcome of a fight. That said, I've gone to great lengths to ensure that cheating is anything but a rewarding business to be involved in, however I can't elaborate on the details due to the nature of these measures.
Quote: I also don't see any real rules around how fights are to start or any specific rules around how they will play out. Is this just going to be up to the participants themselves to figure out?
Correct. I don't think this should prove problematic - do you? |

Originally by: Siigari Kitawa How often does the ladder reset? Because if you've just released this and it's set with most Invicta players with a padded score, how do new players factor in?
I'm not sure I understand. All players start with 1000 rating by default. The first season is scheduled to end on August 1st, at which point prizes are awarded and ladders reset. |

Originally by: Furb Killer I assume you use an elo rating?
The only reason to reset ratings would be because people might stop playing when they got a high rating, and it is basicly impossible to get ahead of them. But just decreasing their rating when they are inactive for a certain time should fix that. And if you use elo rating, new players get quite fast to their final rating anyway.
The idea behind seasons and a rating reset is to encourage new players to join the fun. It's also an excellent opportunity to award players from the previous season. There's an article on how the EVE Arena rating system works in the knowledge base.

Originally by: "Spectre3353" Certain pilots might get a high rank by encouraging certain types of situations that skew the fight towards themselves (ie: starting a fight at range when they're using a nano fit, etc). I totally realize that there is no easy solution to resolving that sort of stuff but it might still be worth at least suggesting how a standard fight should start and play out so that dueling pilots or groups have a set of common suggested rules to fall back on.
You make a good point, Spectre. Consider it noted!

Absolutely positively yes.

IP addresses usually change every few days. Offenders will run out of alts soon enough, though. ;-)

Have you looked into challenges? You could also advertise that you're available for 1v1 in whatever region(s) you live through the message board. A buddy list will be introduced shortly.
Thanks for your input.

Public challenges have been introduced! You may now broadcast challenges from the "public challenges" section in the war room. Thanks to everyone who suggested this feature. |

Unfortunately there are no ways around the problems you describe that would not defeat the purpose of EVE Arena, Neesa. It exists to facilitate combat, not make it harder to arrange than it already is. Consider being ranked a bonus.

Originally by: Trustworthy Joe consider having the victory system requiring both parties to input their outcome.
aka, player A and player B setup a duel. fair, clean fight, both had fun. player A wins, and hits a "i win" box. player B then must go to his profile and check off a "i lose" button.
This is how EVE Arena already works. ;-) |

No. Terrible idea. I hate you.
EVE is a PvP game. PvP should have consequences.

Thanks for your suggestions, Attrezzo. I like the idea of bets a lot, however I am not sure the concept is mature enough to incorporate it. Offering pilots the ability to submit their API keys is also a solid idea.
Right now my primary concern is to communicate the existence of EVE Arena to the players I'm really catering for. Most of them don't read these forums, and as such I am at loss. I sent CCP a mail some time ago asking whether they'd be interested in advertising the service somehow, but was dissapointed to realize that the representative hadn't even bothered to begin reading my mail. I recently submitted a lead to the "Players News Center" - it is my hope that they will consider to write about it. It is the only remaining way I can think of to advertise the concept to the players EVE Arena caters for. |

get it announced on ISD or something.
ISD seem indifferent. Making the in-game news could change everything, but apparently it's not going to happen. |
